Greenhouse Preparation

The clocks have sprung forward, the daffodils are out and it’s nearly time to start sowing this season’s vegetables in the green house. Just before you do, give it a good spring-clean. It’s only once the sun starts shining again on the panes that you can see how dirty they have become. Carefully remove each of the panes giving them and the frames they sit in a good scrub. Accidents can happen but don’t worry, replacement toughened glass is easily available! Ensure that you wipe in the corners and thoroughly sweep through removing the larvae of all the wee beasties whom will otherwise be feasting on your tasty shoots.

Clean all your pots and seed trays, replacing broken ones and checking your label stock. Most of us have a box of seeds we’ve accumulated for years to check their condition, if they are in date and whether they have produced a good crop in your garden in a previous year.

Prepare your greenhouse for the warmer weather to come. If you don’t have one already it’s a great idea to affix a water butt. From this, you cannot only save water but set up an irrigation system without the awkwardness of having a cable stretching from the house.

Now all you have to do is wait for the weather to arrive!
